Y Combinator

Y Combinator has been on ToTheMoon since the very first episode as a barometer of where entrepreneurial energy is going: the hosts read its batches to see what startups build and whether pitch language turns into business. In 2024 the channel called it the most successful accelerator anywhere and went through a batch of 215 companies, where two teams pitched through avatars on demo day; the conclusion was that a buzzword does not create a market, and a product like Devin is judged by how reliably it works, not by its demo (episode 001).

A second 2024 thread treats Y Combinator as part of Altman's biography. The hosts sensed a campaign to repair his reputation after stories about his exit from the accelerator, and recalled that Y Combinator had invested in OpenAI while Altman was still its director; the counterargument was the scoreboard, since both grew under him (episode 010). Later the channel cited Altman's appearance on the Y Combinator channel promising AGI within a year as a vague forecast (episode 032).

In 2025 the tone hardened. The hosts flagged news that some accelerator startups had ninety-five percent of their codebase generated (episode 050), and the story of an engineer holding jobs at five to ten Y Combinator companies at once exposed how thin hiring checks are (episode 066). The verdict came in episode 072: two years after the fall 2023 batch of 229 AI startups, only a handful had grown several times over, and the most visible startups now cluster around OpenAI, not Y Combinator. By 2026 one host spoke of the accelerator with little deference (episode 098).
