WhatsApp in ToTheMoon episodes
On ToTheMoon, WhatsApp is first of all a distribution channel for AI and a bone of contention over privacy. The hosts return to it when discussing how Meta reaches an audience of billions, and when comparing messengers by what is actually encrypted. The main question is whether a huge audience turns into a habit of using AI, and what changes once an assistant gets access to people's messages (episode 106).
In 2024 the story revolved around Llama. Episode 017 noted that Meta was building the model into WhatsApp and Facebook and getting data almost without any separate distribution; in episode 026 the hosts admitted they used Meta AI in WhatsApp themselves but that most people rarely opened it — enormous reach, no habit. Episode 038 saw ChatGPT inside WhatsApp as the entry barrier dropping to almost nothing. In episode 021 on Durov's arrest, WhatsApp served as the point of comparison: its chats are encrypted, yet in the hosts' words its data can be handed through a single window to the US government.
Privacy later took over. Episode 086 compared protocols: WhatsApp chats are encrypted regardless, unlike WeChat and QQ.
