On ToTheMoon, Sam Altman is a source of loud statements the hosts have learned to check for substance: AGI timelines, agent prices, user counts, the singularity. He appears both as a party to the conflict with Elon Musk and as a figure in political arrangements such as Stargate; the hosts' question is what stands behind the OpenAI chief's words and how far to trust them.
In late 2024 the promise of AGI within a year was set against Musk's own dates, and the mismatch was taken as proof that no verifiable definition exists (episode 032). In early 2025 the hosts watched Altman bring the Stargate plan to Trump and, from the scene in which he handed a question about medicine to Ellison, concluded that in product terms it is not his project (episode 042). The tone was sceptical: “neither Elon Musk nor Sam Altman can tell you what they're doing and why” (episode 046). On user numbers the hosts noted he said eight hundred while the company said four hundred (episode 062).
In the second half of 2025 his words prompted more serious analysis. The statement that data in the models is not secure led to the conclusion that a ChatGPT conversation has none of the legal protection of talking to a lawyer (episode 071); his remark that Trump underestimates China was read as a political rather than technical statement (episode 072). In 2026 his response to the voice-GPT case was found a little odd (episode 105), and the claim that humanity is already inside the singularity was called a frame rather than a measurement (episode 145). Episode 177 devoted a whole analysis to trusting him: through the film “Artificial” it set his call to restrain AI against his words that humanity will have to accept bad things, asked why at DevDay he reads from a monitor, and suggested that his public image, too, can be called “artificial”.
