European Union in ToTheMoon episodes
On ToTheMoon the European Union comes up almost exclusively as a rule-maker: not as a market or a model maker, but as the party that writes the first laws for AI and platforms. The hosts keep asking what that approach is really for — protecting citizens' rights or securing control over data — and what it costs an industry when the United States leaves companies room and China ties models to the state.
In 2024 the tone was wary. Episode 013 noted that the EU was so far the only jurisdiction with a broad AI law, and the strictest of the three. Episode 019 read the EU's questions to Apple, OpenAI, xAI and Google as proof that technological scale inevitably turns political. The European demand to label AI content was dismissed in episode 020 as a checkbox: a “created by AI” tag says nothing about how much of a human is in the work. Pavel Durov's arrest in episode 021 shifted the discussion to platform jurisdiction.
By 2025 the hosts had settled on a three-vector map: the US bets on freedom to develop, China treats AI as state infrastructure, and Europe builds rules around risk and citizens' rights (episode 051, episode 068). Episode 056 tested the EU rule on AI in study and at work for enforceability — who records the violation and who answers for it. Episode 086 recorded a reversal: the EU declined to force messengers to scan chats and began calling for some laws to be relaxed so the industry could grow. In episode 150 the hosts wondered why Anthropic applied watermarks required by an EU decree to the whole world, and called the balance with GDPR an open question.
