Stanford in ToTheMoon episodes
Stanford plays two parts on ToTheMoon. It is a source of research the hosts lean on when they argue about how much trust AI deserves, and it is also the neighbourhood next to Alexander Volchek's home, the backdrop for his personal tests of assistants. That gives the channel a double question: what Stanford's researchers find about the quality of AI products, and whether an assistant understands the context of a person who lives five minutes from campus.
The research thread starts in 2024. In episode 027 the hosts recounted how a local school concluded that banning AI was pointless. Episode 045 recalled Stanford as the team that, with Berkeley, trained a DeepSeek-level model on OpenAI outputs for under five hundred dollars. In episode 055 Alexander loaded Stanford's 470-page annual report into a model. The most detailed treatment is episode 063: Stanford researchers examined five chatbots marketed as cheap mental-health help and found they reinforce stigma, can suggest dangerous actions to someone with suicidal thoughts, and miss situations that need a human.
The second thread is everyday life. In episode 075 a coffee run to Stanford opened a conversation about robotaxis, in episode 134 Stanford was among the Valley towns where the host asked for a cafe recommendation, and in episode 109 ChatGPT suggested a concert at Stanford without knowing he was already going there on Sunday, a model blind to real context. In episode 136, in 2026, Alexander added that “Stanford is five minutes from me” (episode 136) and that most people wearing Stanford hoodies never studied there.
