In ToTheMoon's conversations Alibaba is the clearest example of a Chinese company shaping the global AI market indirectly, through open models and capital. The hosts bring it up when they compare the Chinese and American ecosystems and argue about who really supplies startups with their models. The channel's question is why a company from a rival country ends up propping up American generative AI, and what happens when the borders between ecosystems start to close.

The early mentions are about scale. In 2024, in episodes 009 and 013, Alibaba stood for how advanced a Chinese product already was years earlier, and in episode 051 Alexander recalled that Alibaba in Russia is roughly one percent of the real thing. The key analysis is episode 061: Alibaba's open models, the hosts argued, push American startups harder than the closed models of OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, because optimising for mass scenarios needs open source, and DeepSeek has no cash-printing machine of Alibaba's kind.

By 2026 the tone turns from surprise to wariness. In episode 133 Qwen 5.2 was judged competitive and deployable on an enterprise's own hardware, yet the same conversation turned to Alibaba banning its employees from Claude Code as a threat to the company. Episode 140 mentioned that Alibaba is Moonshot's main investor, and in episode 152 the hosts reported Anthropic's complaint to the US Senate that Chinese models, Alibaba's among them, had trained on Claude through many accounts and distilled it. The openness that episode 061 treated as a gift had, by late summer 2026, become a dispute about rules.
