In ToTheMoon episodes China is the second pole of the AI race and a standing test of American leadership. The hosts do not ask whether China will catch up; they ask how it is building its own system out of models, chips, energy, manufacturing and state coordination, and which parts of that the United States and the rest of the world cannot copy.

As early as episode 013 in 2024 the hosts argued that Chinese models could no longer be described as cheap copies of Western ones: they ship openly and grow inside a huge domestic market, while ByteDance and Kuaishou do not wait for Sora to go mainstream. In episode 035 the story of a vacuum robot leading other machines off an exhibition floor led to a conclusion that intelligence needs a body, production and a price, China's strength, along with an energy supply that by 2030 will exceed that of the next ten countries. Episode 053 read the open-source releases of Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent and DeepSeek as a catch-up strategy the country could close off once it leads.

From mid-2025 the channel recorded the United States acknowledging that strength. Episode 055 covered Altman's warning that without the right to train on the open internet America would lose to China, alongside mandatory AI classes in Chinese schools; episode 058 explained the decision to sell NVIDIA chips worldwide as an admission that China could substitute them with its own. Episode 088 added a caveat to the patents and data: a vast store of behavioral data gives an edge in recognition and robotics, but at the cost of a level of surveillance that would cause a serious conflict elsewhere.
